My Updates

Seven Sleeps to go!

Sunday 15th Jun

Seven sleeps to go and at this time next week I will hopefully have passed the 4th feed stop, (tomato soup pls), and will be well on my way into the North London suburbs. The work is all in the legs now, a blast down the Suffolk coast on Friday was my last outing until next Sunday. It’s sleep, stretching, and plenty of water until the first pedal stroke at 5.03am on Sunday next week!

I’ll mail a tracker link on Saturday night, look me up on the road!

Alps D'Huez and Ventoux

Sunday 8th Jun
I stretched my legs in France earlier this week, with rides combining to over 5300m of climbing. 21 Hairpins drew me up Alps D’Huez, with an average gradient of >11% and in 34 degree heat, rock faces radiate back at you on every other traverse. Pushing on higher the Col de Galibier brought wind, snow, rain and an ice waterfall before last 100m to the snowwhite col, not the conditions for Lycra!

Day 2, and the balcony road might as well have been chipped out of the cliff face with so few cars braving the narrow shelf and foot high wall, or no wall at all, to a 1000 foot drop below, this is cycling mecca. Only bettered by submerging my head an ice cold drinking fountain in the final hamlet, before climbing gravel tracks through scree to the peak.

Last and by no means least, we transferred to Ventoux and with my train leaving the next day early I had to decide; discount sleep, or leave the mountain unconquered. And if you don't do the climb you can't wear the shirt! My 3am alarm extinguished, off we went in the blackness for 32kms and 1800m. Sunrise came and went around Chalet Reynard and the last 300m beckoned, taking us above the tree line to the bald mountain in the wind.

Finally with a jumper and gloves installed, the descent is all a rush, scanning the road the mind focuses on every tiny bump as 50/60/70km/h go by. Corners are simply walls or steps into nothing, cars can't keep up. Every cyclist you meet waves as they toil to the summit, gravity pulls you relentlessly down. 40mins later back in the valley the villages are waking up and the weather station is a speck on the skyline. There are three climbs and descents on Ventoux two wait for me next time....

Off to the Alps, 23 days to go!

Friday 30th May
Just checked the calendar and slightly concerned to see that it is only 23 days until I clip in at 5 am for a marathon cycle ride from Manchester to London in one day.

As those who cycle may tell you, when it comes to climbing more power is great but less weight trumps it every time. In order to test that theory I'm currently on the TGV heading to Alps D'Heuz for some tour stage climbs, taking in the heady heights of Ventoux, Col du Galibier and ominously the Balcony Road, check your brakes!!

By Monday I am hoping to have checked more than 8000m of climbing off the list and dropped a few more Kgs towards a target, and definitely temporary weigh in on the 22nd June. I'll then be relying on the commute and probably 1-2 100km plus rides before tapering into the third week of June when the carb load starts in earnest.

This is all to quite simply to maximise the opportunity for those whose perspectives are shifted by Autism. If you have already sponsored me, thank you, if not pls check the link below, you know what to do.
